| Kerala
is an enchantingly beautiful, emerald green sliver of land, flanked by the
Western Ghats on one side, the Arabian Sea on the other, and strewn with
rivers, lagoons, backwaters and rich vegetation in between. Various clans
and ethnic groups have influenced the culture of Kerala over a period of
years. Cultural invasions led to the blending of various art forms. Koodiyattam
for example is a fusion of the local Dravidian culture and some Aryan influences.
Krishnanattam, Kathakali, Thullal, Mohiniattam etc. are some of the local
dances that arose out of the fusion. Among these, Koodiyattam,
the highly stylised art form of Kerala has been recognised by the UNESCO
as “a masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage
of humanity to be protected, preserved and promoted.” Here we
try to portray the Cultural and Classical Art forms of Kerala. |
