| A.R. Rajaraja Varma (1863-1918) founded
the critical tradition in Malayalam. Ramakrishna Pillai (1877-1916) editor
of the Swadesabhimani was also a vigorous prose writer. |

| Elamkulam Kunju Pillai was a writer
who focused on Kerala's history. He correlated literary analysis of the
language with the history of Kerala. The literary biographers of the time
were P.K.Parameshwaran Nair, and P.K.Balakrishnan. |

| A.Balakrishna Pillai was the editor
of the journal Kesari. He recommended a total revision of
outlook in life and literature, through his works. |

| Sanjayan (M.R.Nair) (1903-1942) was
the editor of a journal called Sanjayan. His contributions
were satirical essays. His articles were criticisms of the contemporary
social state. Another writer who look to humorous writing was E.V.Krishna
Pillai (1805-1938). His skits and essays are relevant even during the present

| One of the best works belonging to
the category of travel literature is Himagiri Vihaaram by
P. Chippukkutty Nair. S.K.Pottekkat is a major contributor in this field.

| Kuttikrishna Marar is one of the best
essayists of the time. His work Malayaala Saili is still
one of the most authentic treatises on proper Malayalam usage. Bhaarata
Paryatanam (Travel through Bharata), another important work of
Marar is critical exposition of the main events in the epic Mahaabhaarata.
